MEDIA IVE WATCHED WITH DICK GRAYSON

BATMAN: THE MOVIE (1966)

I absolutely love this movie with every single bone in my body. It's HILARIOUS and I genuinely couldn't control myself the entire time, I had to pause it multiple times just to give myself a minute to breathe because I was laughing so bad. It was probably intended to be somewhat cool and action-y back in the day, but it's in no way a serious movie, and the fact it was made about 60 years ago means the terrible quality and just about everything else makes it hilarious.

Like I said in another entry, I adore content about Dick Grayson's early days as Robin, and this just shows his and Batman's relation in such a fun father-son way that I just love it so much. It's so unserious and was so enjoyable to watch that I'd recommend anyone just giving it a go, because I swear you'll want to keep watching as soon as you start.

This movie is so quotable I swear I'm gonna be making references to it for the rest of my life, and the riddles are so insane that you just sit there like WHAT! and Bats and Robin act like it makes perfect sense. Peak television, honestly. Watch this movie.

HARLEY QUINN (Series)

I have only seen the episodes of this show with Nightwing in it--honestly it seems like a pretty good show, but I just don't have that level of motivation to watch a DC show entirely if it doesn't have Dick Grayson in most of it, maybe one day!

I think Nightwing is pretty funny in this to be honest, and even though he's presented as REALLY stupid (which I hate), I still understand that this is from the POV of Harley and Ivy who definitely would think he's stupid, and the fact it's a villains comedy and Nightwing is a hero, so I can give it a pass in that respect.

They focus way too much on Nightwings butt though. Let the man live.

LEGO DC: BATMAN - FAMILY MATTERS

I have extremely mixed feelings about this movie?? When I first watched it, I was really enjoying it up until the part where Jason is revealed (since its an Under the Hood remake essentially) because I thought it was REALLY funny, but the fact they completely undermined Jason's character just didn't sit right with me at all. And the fact he made him so STUPID was annoying!

Looking back on it now when I don't feel as shocked and betrayed by the shitty twist, it's honestly kind of hilarious and I'm considering rewatching it with a better outlook. I think I could really enjoy it if I look at it as a parody of the original story and not an actual (somewhat) serious movie.

Dick appears in this movie quite a bit, since its mostly about the Bat Family, but for some reason he's presented as dumb as shit?? I watched this after having just read Wayne Family Adventures (see the Readlist) and was also pretty confused by Babs and Dick's relationship, but it makes a little more sense after learning more about them. I appreciate that he's still represented as capable, he could stand his ground against Jason which I was fanboying about, but GOD he's so stupid. I think it funny and I hate it at the same time--which also just about sums up my opinion of this movie, so maybe that's a reason why!

Basically, watch this if you wanna laugh at how stupid they are, ignore the slightly OOC characters, and pretend Damian isnt there. That's a whole other can of worms, he's like a completely different person, just don't question it.

Also, as a sidenote, this movie is in no way connected to The Lego Batman Movie, its lower quality but still decent, and you WILL be shocked and confused at Bruce's voice at first. The movie has quite a different style but still has that lego-comedy which is good.

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE

This, tied with Teen Titans (2003) and Batman (1966) is my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE peice of Batman media. Words can't describe how much I fucking love this movie. It's got some of the best character portrayals in DC history, and it's FUNNY, and Dick Grayson is Robin, and it's lego!! I really appreciate media of Dick's early Robin days, especially when he's a gooby little guy, and this movie is also where I get the headcanon that Dick speaks Spanish (which makes me very happy as someone learning Spanish).

Even better, it's one of the VERY FEW peices of Batman media where I actually like the Joker, and honestly it's my favourite portrayal of his character. This Joker is the best one. It's this one.

We ignore the Babs and Batman hinted romance thing, that isn't there, it's Batman and Joker obviously.

UNDER THE RED HOOD (Movie)

This movie doesn't have a lot of Dick Grayson, but he does appear briefly as Nightwing, and while he does have kinda stupid hair, I love how silly he is.

I like this movie since I'm a fan of the Under The Hood arc and generally Jason's story, but Nightwing isn't that important in it, it's mostly about Jason, so if you're not into that then maybe it isn't for you. I was also multitasking while watching it, so maybe I missed stuff, who knows!

YOUNG JUSTICE (Season 1)

I'm only talking about Season 1 here, because I haven't watched past that and I'm not sure when I will! I got a little upset at the fact I spent ages trying to (totally legally..) download the entire series, only to finish Season 1 and see TIM DRAKE show up instead of Dick. Do not get me wrong. I love Tim. But I was so taken aback and devastated that I just deleted it on the spot. In my defense, this was during the period after watching Teen Titans where I refused to accept that my favourite Robin could grow up and stop being Robin--thankfully I got better.

I love this portrayal of Dick, not only is he silly as hell and brings most of the comedy, he's actually portrayed as super intelligent and I appreciate that.

What I DON'T appreciate about this series is the fact that Robin is the literal second-in-command of The Team, and yet ISN'T EVEN IN MOST OF THE EPISODES?? I swear the writers just didn't know what to do with him so they sent him to "help Batman with something" all the time. While I was watching Season 1, I kept praying at the start of each episode that it would be about Robin, and it NEVER was. Even in the episode where they literally go to the place he watched his parents DIE they just show him being a little bit anxious, they don't even address it properly, and it made me upset.

He does appear as Nightwing in later seasons though, and now I'm over my little Dick-is-not-allowed-to-age funk, I might watch it at some point.

TEEN TITANS (2003)

Shockingly, I watched this years after Teen Titans Go!, probably because it wasn't on Netflix and I had no idea it existed.

This is honestly one of my favourite peices of DC media, especially containing Robin, ESPECIALLY containing Dick Grayson as Robin. I absolutely love his portrayal in this series, and his and Slade's (ENEMY) relationship is one of the most interesting dynamics between a hero and a villain I've seen. Also Slade is a creep and he's horrifying. What the fuck DC!

Basically, Dick in this series is on relatively complicated terms with Batman, and since he's the leader of a team, he gets a lot more serious, but I love seeing this different side to him that not much other media shows, because he IS a smart Robin, he IS an angry Robin and he DOES know what he's doing!! It's such a fun break from all the incompetent Nightwing stuff I see everywhere.

Also as a sidenote, (slight spoilers, don't read this if you havent seen the series) I'm so sure that I would have absolutely eaten up Terra's arc in this series if I'd watched it when I was like 9 yrs old, because powerful heroes being corrupted and manipulated into becoming villains was like my dumb little angsty kid JAM and she has long blonde hair?? Like I used to?? I would've gone wild.

TEEN TITANS GO!

Ah, back in the days when little me had unrestricted access to NETFLIX! Somehow I managed to watch every shitty show and movie I could find on there and ended up with a soft spot for the terrible media in every fandom.

To be fair, I still have that soft spot for TTG but not... a lot... The fact that they abuse Robin every episode when he was my favourite was always a turn-away for me, and now that he's my favourite character over all Batman media, it hurts my soul even more.

My advice is, watch this if you wanna have a fun time and watch the Teen Titans do outlandishly stupid things and make fun of the original series, I think it's good in that respect (especially the movies), but maybe don't watch it if you are a diehard Dick Grayson apologist and having a bad day because he does NOT get any a goddamn break in any of it.
